Cheerleading Tryouts

MAKE SURE YOU APPLY TO THE UNIVERSITY AND FOR FINANCIAL AID FIRST, BEFORE YOU TRYOUT!

Please read the following carefully and return all information requested by the specified date.

General Information:

The University has only one cheerleading team. The team is composed of at least eight (8) females and eight (8) males. The team cheers at all football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and women’s volleyball home games.

The main purpose of the tryout process is to select the best overall individuals for the UH cheerleading team. When selecting the team we are looking for individuals that demonstrate proper technical skills, ability to communicate, excellent athletic abilities, positive attitude, noteworthy cheerleading experience and poise. Generally, these are individuals who are ready and prepared to contribute to the program immediately.

The tryout process includes two mandatory days of clinics during which you will learn new material. At the actual tryout, you will be judged by a panel of experts and will be evaluated on your partner stunt and gymnastic skills, showmanship, attitude, as well as your performance of the newly learned material. The tryout process will also include an interview process. The Head Coach and the Advisor will select the members of the UH team by using the judges scores along with their own evaluations made over the entire tryout process and over the year for returnees.

Each tryout candidate will be notified either by phone, mail or e-mail as to their tryout results within 2-4 weeks after April 24, 2004. Please note: Tuition waivers may not be known at this time due to the UH Financial Aid Office still determining who qualifies for financial aid tuition waivers.

For local tryouts, please come dressed in comfortable practice clothes and shoes to the UH Athletics Complex on Monday, April19, 2004 at 4:00 pm which is located at 1337 Lower Campus Road, for a mandatory meeting and first practice.

If you do not have this form with you on the first day, you will not be allowed to practice.

The material for the local tryouts will be taught on April 19, 2004 and April 21, 2004 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm and are mandatory. There will also be an optional practice on Friday, April 23, 2004  4:00 - 5:00 pm. The actual tryout will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2004 at 10:00 am in Studio 4.

There is a judging category on appearance; therefore, you should consider clothing that is appropriate and appealing. Absolutely no jewelry.

On the day of tryouts, we will begin with the cheer, dance (girls only), gymnastics, partner stunts and then continue immediately afterward with the interview process.

RETURNEES: You will be given a different requirement list than the new local and off-island candidates. You are expected to perform at a higher standard than the other candidates being that you were a part of the UH program for at least a year. You will also be judged on your integrity and character over the course of the year by the advisor and head coach.
