Top-Notch Facilities
The University of Hawai'i Athletic Department facility is the
first phase of the $13 million Health, Physical Education and
Recreation-Athletic Complex and was completed in 1981. The three-story
facility houses offices for coaches, athletic administration
and staff along with the HPER department and intramural office.
The structure also contains two weight rooms; locker rooms for
men's and women's varsity sports; separate training rooms for
men and women; the ticket office; men's and women's equipment
rooms; studios for HPER classes; two practice gyms for volleyball,
basketball and intramural sports; 500-seat auditorium and lecture
hall; student lounge; study area; and locker rooms for men's
and women's HPER classes.
The two weight rooms provide an ideal environment for athletes
to build strength and endurance. One of the weight rooms is
a complete free weight system (also known as a dead weight
or heavy weight system). It is filled with dumbbells, various
bench presses, squat racks, curling bars, pulleys, etc. These
weights are used to isolate and develop bulk to help athletes
through a demanding season.
The other weight room provides the latest in mechanical fitness
apparatus. It enables the athlete to work out with various
equipment that will strengthen any muscle in the body. The
machine weight room has Nautilus, Universal and high-tech
hydro and air-pressurized machines, which increase endurance
by vigorous repetitions.
The facility is located in the Lower Campus area, which
also houses the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex, which has
a 50-meter x 25-yard pool and a 25 x 25-yard, 18-foot deep
diving well; 12 tennis courts, a softball field and Rainbow
Stadium, a 4,312-seat baseball stadium considered the finest
in the country. Cooke Field, an astro turf practice football
field surrounded by a rubberized track, is the site where
the Rainbow football team tunes up before each contest. The
squad also uses two regulation-size grass practice fields
adjacent to Cooke Field.
Located across from Cooke Field is the home of the Rainbow
Wahine Softball team. Wahine home games are played here at
the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium which seats 500 people.
